What Is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of chronic joint pain.
It can affect the knees, hips, hands, spine, and other joints.
In the knee, changes can occur in the cartilage, bone, joint lining, and surrounding tissues.
Symptoms may include:
- Knee pain during activity
- Stiffness after periods of inactivity
- Difficulty climbing stairs
- Pain when standing up
- Reduced range of motion
- Swelling
- A feeling of grinding or clicking
- Difficulty walking for long periods
Symptoms can vary significantly from one person to another.
Osteoarthritis also does not progress identically in everyone.
Some people have relatively mild symptoms, while others develop substantial pain and loss of function.
Does Eating Eggshell Powder Treat Arthritis?
There is not enough evidence to say that homemade eggshell powder is an established treatment for arthritis.
Some research has examined eggshell-derived compounds, including eggshell membrane, for potential effects related to joint health.
But it is important not to confuse eggshell membrane research with the claim that eating crushed eggshells will rebuild cartilage.
Eggshell membrane is the thin layer found inside the shell and has a different composition from the hard calcium-rich shell itself.
Research involving a particular standardized supplement or extracted compound also cannot automatically be used to support a homemade preparation made from kitchen eggshells.
This distinction is often lost in social media posts.
What About Eggshell Membrane?
Eggshell membrane has attracted scientific interest because it contains proteins and other compounds, including collagen-related components.
Some studies have investigated eggshell membrane supplements in people with joint discomfort.
However, even if a particular supplement shows potential for reducing symptoms, that does not mean it can regenerate severely damaged cartilage in hours.
Reducing pain and rebuilding cartilage are two very different claims.
A person may experience less discomfort without the underlying joint structure being completely restored.
This is an important concept when evaluating advertisements and social media health claims.
Why Might Someone Feel Better After Taking a Remedy?
Pain naturally fluctuates.
A person may experience a better day after trying a particular food or supplement, but that does not necessarily prove that the food caused structural repair.
Pain can change depending on activity, sleep, stress, inflammation, weather, body weight, muscle strength, and many other factors.
The placebo effect can also influence how people perceive symptoms.
This does not mean the person’s improvement is imaginary. The improvement can be completely real while the explanation for it is different from what a social media post claims.
That is why controlled research is important.
Is Homemade Eggshell Powder Safe?
This is another important issue.
Raw eggshells can potentially be contaminated with microorganisms, particularly if they have not been properly handled.
Simply washing an eggshell and crushing it into powder does not necessarily make it safe.
There is also a question of particle size.
Large or sharp fragments could potentially irritate the mouth or digestive tract.
Another concern is dosage.
A person making eggshell powder at home may have no reliable way to determine exactly how much calcium is contained in each spoonful.
Too much calcium can also be problematic.
Therefore, “natural calcium” does not mean that unlimited quantities are safe.
