Extra caution is necessary when essential oils are present around young children.
The biggest concern is not simply smelling the oil.
It is accidental contact or ingestion.
Essential oils are concentrated, and some can be poisonous when swallowed. Eucalyptus oil in particular can cause serious poisoning if ingested, including neurological effects such as seizures. (Poison Control)
For that reason, bottles of essential oil should always be stored safely and out of the reach of children.
A clothespin used with oil should also be placed somewhere a child cannot easily grab it, remove it, or put it in their mouth.
What About Pets?
Pets should also be considered.
Animals can be more sensitive to certain concentrated aromatic substances than people.
If you have pets that enter the bathroom, keep bottles and oil-treated objects inaccessible to them.
The safest approach is to avoid allowing an animal to lick, chew, or ingest anything containing concentrated essential oil.
