Another possible cause is Carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition in which the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through a narrow passage in the wrist.
This nerve supplies sensation to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger.
Carpal tunnel syndrome often causes symptoms at night because wrist positions during sleep can increase pressure on the nerve.
Common symptoms include:
- Tingling or numbness in the thumb and first two fingers.
- Waking up with an uncomfortable hand.
- Shaking the hand to relieve the sensation.
- Symptoms that become more frequent over time.
- Difficulty gripping objects or weakness of the thumb in more advanced cases.
People who perform repetitive hand movements may experience symptoms, although carpal tunnel syndrome can occur for many reasons.
What you can do: Keeping the wrist straight during sleep may help. A properly fitted nighttime wrist splint can also be useful for some people.
If symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with everyday activities, consult a healthcare professional. Early assessment can help prevent ongoing nerve damage.
3. Ulnar Nerve Compression
Not all hand numbness comes from the same nerve.
The ulnar nerve supplies sensation to the little finger and part of the ring finger. It can become compressed around the elbow or wrist.
Sleeping with your elbows bent tightly for long periods may increase pressure on this nerve.
You might experience:
- Tingling in the little finger.
- Numbness in the ring finger.
- Discomfort along the inner side of the elbow.
- Hand weakness or difficulty spreading your fingers.
If the symptoms mainly affect the little finger and the adjacent half of the ring finger, ulnar nerve compression may be a possibility.
What you can do: Avoid prolonged pressure on your elbows and try not to keep them tightly bent throughout the night.
Persistent numbness or weakness requires medical evaluation, particularly if you begin dropping objects or notice reduced hand coordination.
4. Nerve Problems Originating in the Neck
Sometimes, numbness in the hands begins higher up in the body.
Nerves travel from the spinal cord in the neck through the shoulders and arms to the fingers. A problem affecting one of these nerves can produce symptoms far from its origin.
Conditions such as a herniated cervical disc or age-related changes in the spine may irritate or compress a nerve.
Possible symptoms include:
- Numbness affecting part of the hand or arm.
- Tingling that travels from the neck toward the fingers.
- Neck pain or stiffness.
- Pain that becomes worse with certain head movements.
- Weakness in the arm or hand.
Not everyone with nerve compression experiences neck pain, so the absence of neck discomfort does not completely rule it out.
What you can do: If numbness repeatedly occurs alongside neck pain, radiating arm pain, or weakness, seek medical advice.
A healthcare professional can examine your neck, arm strength, reflexes, and sensation to determine whether further investigation is needed.
5. Diabetes and Peripheral Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is a condition in which diabetes-related nerve damage causes symptoms such as tingling, burning, pain, or reduced sensation.
It most commonly affects the feet and legs first, but the hands can also become involved.
Unlike numbness caused by an awkward sleeping position, diabetic nerve symptoms may occur throughout the day and tend to persist or progress.
Possible signs include:
- Tingling or burning in the hands or feet.
- Reduced ability to feel temperature or touch.
- Pain that is more noticeable at night.
- Symptoms affecting both sides of the body.
Other conditions, including vitamin deficiencies, certain medications, and some thyroid disorders, can also cause peripheral neuropathy.
What you can do: If you have diabetes and develop new or worsening numbness, discuss it with your healthcare professional. Good diabetes management and assessment of other possible causes can help protect nerve health.
Do not assume that all tingling is caused by diabetes, even if you have the condition.
