Symptoms of a UTI can include:
- Burning when urinating
- Frequent urination
- Urgent need to urinate
- Lower abdominal discomfort
- Cloudy urine
- Blood in the urine
- Strong-smelling urine
Fever, chills, back or side pain, vomiting, or feeling seriously unwell can be signs of a more complicated infection and warrant prompt medical attention.
So while thyme may be an interesting herb to study, it shouldn’t replace appropriate treatment for a diagnosed UTI.
What About Bladder Infections?
A bladder infection is usually a type of urinary tract infection.
The same caution applies here.
Laboratory research involving thyme compounds doesn’t mean that thyme tea can reliably eliminate a bladder infection in humans.
There has been research into combinations of traditional herbal medicines for recurrent UTIs, and some studies have reported potential benefits. However, evidence across herbal products varies considerably, and a meta-analysis found that traditional herbal medicine alone was not superior to antibiotics for acute treatment in the studies analyzed.
That is an important distinction because online articles sometimes take evidence about a mixture of several herbs, or a laboratory experiment involving an essential oil, and present it as proof that one particular herb cures an infection.
Those are not equivalent.
Does Thyme Kill Herpes Viruses?
This claim also needs to be treated carefully.
Herpes viruses are different from bacteria.
A substance that has antibacterial activity doesn’t automatically work against viruses.
Some plant compounds and essential oils have demonstrated antiviral activity in laboratory research, but laboratory findings don’t establish that drinking thyme or applying thyme oil to a lesion will cure herpes.
There is currently no reason to interpret the image’s statement that thyme “destroys herpes” as an established medical treatment.
If someone has suspected or diagnosed herpes, appropriate medical advice is important because antiviral medications may be used depending on the type of infection and the person’s circumstances.
Can Thyme Destroy Flu Viruses?
The same principle applies to influenza.
There is no strong scientific evidence that thyme or another ordinary herbal product can be relied upon to treat or prevent influenza.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that there is currently no strong scientific evidence that any natural product is useful against influenza.
This doesn’t mean herbs are worthless.
It means we need to distinguish between:
“This plant contains compounds with interesting laboratory activity.”
and:
“This herb is a proven treatment for influenza.”
The first statement can be supported by experimental research.
The second requires convincing human clinical evidence.
What About Arthritis and Joint Pain?
Thyme is sometimes promoted online as a natural treatment for arthritis, inflammation, sciatica and joint pain.
Again, the evidence should be interpreted cautiously.
Some compounds in herbs have antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory experiments. But that doesn’t automatically mean consuming thyme will relieve arthritis pain or reverse joint damage.
Arthritis is also not one single disease.
Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory or autoimmune conditions have different causes and treatments.
Someone experiencing persistent joint pain should not postpone appropriate evaluation because they believe an herb will treat the underlying condition.
Thyme can certainly be part of a healthy diet, particularly because it allows you to add flavor without relying heavily on salt.
But that’s very different from claiming that it is a cure for arthritis.
Why Does Thyme Get So Much Attention?
There are several reasons.
First, thyme contains compounds such as thymol and carvacrol that have demonstrated antimicrobial properties in experimental research.
Second, thyme has a long history of traditional use.
Third, essential oils are highly concentrated, making their effects appear particularly impressive in laboratory experiments.
And fourth, social media often turns a nuanced scientific finding into a dramatic headline.
For example:
Scientific finding:
“A thyme-derived compound inhibited bacterial growth under laboratory conditions.”
can quickly become:
Social-media claim:
“This herb destroys infections.”
Those statements are not equivalent.
