Homemade skincare recipes can be incredibly tempting, especially when a photo appears to show dramatic results after only a couple of weeks.
One viral image claims that a simple mixture made with honey and baby oil can give mature skin a smooth, youthful, “wrinkle-free” appearance and even eliminate the need for makeup.
The recipe sounds simple, and both ingredients can certainly have useful moisturizing properties. But the claim that this combination can erase wrinkles in 15 days is much stronger than the available evidence supports.
There is, however, a reasonable skincare idea hiding behind the viral recipe: keeping the skin moisturized can temporarily make fine lines look less noticeable and leave the surface looking smoother and more radiant.
Let’s look at what this homemade mixture may actually do, how to use it more safely, and what it cannot realistically accomplish.
What Is the Homemade Remedy?
The image appears to show two main ingredients:
- Honey
- Baby oil
The baby oil shown appears to be a Johnson’s product, although the exact formulation can vary depending on the product and country.
Johnson’s describes its classic baby oil as being designed to moisturize skin and help lock in moisture, particularly when applied to damp skin. The company states that the classic product is mostly mineral oil, with less than 1% fragrance. (Johnsons Baby)
Honey, meanwhile, is a humectant, meaning it can help attract and retain water. Honey has also been studied in cosmetic formulations for its moisturizing and skin-conditioning properties.
So there is a logical reason this combination might leave skin feeling softer and more hydrated.
But hydration is not the same thing as reversing skin aging.
Why Moisturized Skin Can Look Younger
This is probably the most important part of understanding the viral claim.
When skin becomes dry, its surface can develop tiny lines and rough texture that make wrinkles appear more prominent.
Applying a moisturizer can increase the amount of water in the outer layer of the skin.
That can temporarily make the skin look:
- Smoother
- Softer
- Plumper
- More luminous
- Less flaky
- Less visibly lined
The American Academy of Dermatology explains that moisturizing traps water in the skin and can make some fine lines less noticeable.
So someone might genuinely look better after applying a moisturizing mixture.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean the underlying wrinkles have disappeared.
Honey May Help With Skin Hydration
Honey has a long history of use in skin care.
Research has examined honey for its:
- Humectant properties
- Emollient effects
- Skin-soothing properties
- Antioxidant activity
- Antimicrobial properties
A review published in Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology described honey’s use in cosmetic formulations and noted its potential moisturizing and skin-conditioning effects.
More recently, a small controlled study involving 24 volunteers examined hand creams containing different concentrations of multifloral honey.
After four weeks, the honey-containing creams were associated with improvements in kin moisturization and smoothness, and some wrinkle measurements also improved. (
That’s interesting—but there’s an important limitation.
The study tested formulated hand creams, not a homemade mixture of kitchen honey and baby oil.
Therefore, we cannot assume that mixing the two ingredients at home will produce the same results.
Baby Oil Has a Different Role
Baby oil isn’t an anti-aging treatment in the traditional sense.
Its main function is helping reduce moisture loss from the skin.
Johnson’s recommends applying its classic baby oil to damp skin, explaining that it helps lock in moisture. (Johnsons Baby)
This makes sense from a skincare perspective.
Think of it this way:
Water hydrates the skin → oil helps slow moisture loss.
That combination can make dry skin feel significantly softer.
This is one reason oil-based products are often useful for people with dry skin.
