Look for dripping water, condensation, damp surfaces, or leaks.
A small leak underneath a sink can go unnoticed for a long time while continuously creating a moist environment.
If you discover a leak, repair it rather than simply wiping away the water.
Bathrooms Can Attract Cockroaches Too
Don’t assume cockroaches only belong in kitchens.
Bathrooms can provide several things they need, including moisture, humidity, darkness, and hiding places.
Inspect underneath the sink and around plumbing openings.
Check behind the toilet and around pipes entering the wall.
If your bathroom stays humid for long periods, improve ventilation whenever possible.
Running an exhaust fan during and after showers can help reduce moisture.
Keeping surfaces dry and repairing leaks can also make the environment less favorable for pests.
Small Cracks Can Become Entry Points
Cockroaches can use surprisingly small gaps to enter or move through a building.
Look carefully around areas where pipes, wires, or other utilities pass through walls.
Also inspect:
- Door frames
- Window frames
- Baseboards
- Wall cracks
- Cabinet openings
- Plumbing penetrations
- Areas around drains
Sealing suitable gaps can help reduce access.
Pay particular attention to exterior doors.
If there is a noticeable gap underneath a door, weather stripping or another appropriate door seal may help reduce the opening.
Cardboard Boxes Can Provide Hiding Places
Cockroaches like dark, protected spaces.
Cardboard boxes can provide places for insects to hide, particularly when boxes are stored for long periods in dark or humid areas.
If you have accumulated unnecessary boxes, consider recycling them rather than keeping them indefinitely.
Keep storage areas organized and avoid creating piles of clutter where insects can remain undisturbed.
This is especially important in garages, storage rooms, basements, and other areas that aren’t inspected frequently.
Why Do Cockroaches Often Appear at Night?
Cockroaches are generally nocturnal.
During the day, they often remain hidden in protected areas.
At night, they become more active and search for food and water.
That’s why someone may walk into the kitchen late at night, turn on the light, and suddenly see a cockroach disappear behind an appliance.
A single nighttime sighting doesn’t automatically prove that you have a major infestation.
