Seeing a group of wasps gathered around your home can be unsettling. They may appear around a roof, wooden structure, garden shed, fence, porch, garbage area, or another sheltered location, and when several are flying around the same place, it can be tempting to reach for the quickest possible solution.
The image shows numerous yellow-and-black wasps around a wooden structure, likely near a nest or an area they are using. Although viral posts often promise an instant homemade “hack” that will kill wasps quickly, dealing with wasps safely is more important than trying an unverified mixture.
Wasps are useful insects in the environment, but a nest located close to a doorway, children’s play area, patio, or another frequently used part of a home can become a legitimate safety concern.
Understanding why they are there—and knowing when to leave them alone—is the best place to start.
Why Are Wasps Around Your Home?
Wasps don’t necessarily choose a house because something is wrong with it.
They may be attracted by several ordinary things.
These include:
- Food
- Sweet drinks
- Fruit
- Garbage
- Pet food
- Water
- Insects
- Sheltered spaces
- Wood structures
- Gaps beneath roofs
- Wall cavities
- Garden vegetation
During warmer months, wasp activity can become much more noticeable.
Some species hunt insects, while others are attracted to sugary substances and ripe fruit.
A property can therefore provide both food and shelter.
